Uveitis
Uveitis is an inflammation of the middle parts of the eye (the uvea)
The uvea consists of the iris(colored part of eye surrounding the pupil), the iris muscles and the choroid a layer of tissue behind the iris and between the retina. The inflammation of the uvea causes a painful red eye, increased light sensitivity, floaters and blurred vision. There are two principal types: The anterior version, which is more commonly known as
Iritis
which affects the iris and ciliary body. And a posterior version which affects the choroid. This version may not be so painful, but can cause serious eye problems if left untreated.
Uveal inflammation can be caused by a number of diseases(such as arthritis/sarcoid and other auto-immune diseases), through infections or as a complication of eye trauma/injury and effect all age groups. Tretament of the condition involves the use of steroidal eye drops or injections and also alleviating any underlying infection/disease which may have been responsible. In all occurences of a red eye or blurred vision it is recommended to consult a medical eye practitioner for further advice and a thorough eye examination.
