Stigmatism of the Eye and Its Correction

Stigmatism of the eye, or as it is correctly known Astigmatism.

It is a common eye condition and occurs in conjunction with either long sight or short sight.

In an eye with astigmatism the front surface of the eye,the cornea is shaped not as a regular sphere (as in an eye with normal vision ) but instead it has the shape of a rugby ball/american football.

It can also occur when the lens inside the eye has a similarly irregular oval shape, denoted as lenticular astigmatism.

This oval shape of the cornea, (or lens) causes light to be focussed not on one point inside the eye as in normal vision giving a clear picture; but in two or more different points thus causing blurred vision. (see diagrams below)

Astigmatism/ stigmatism is quite often inherited and is present from birth. It can be corrected with spectacles and all types of contact lenses (including the latest daily disposables) as well as with modern laser eye surgery procedures.

The contact lenses used to correct astigmatism are known as toric contact lenses. These lenses have different curvatures in diferent meridians to correct astigmatic visiion problems.
