Pupillometry in Laser Eye Surgery

Pupillometry involves measuring the largest diameter of the pupil ,this occurs in low light levels/darkness.

It is an important part of the pre-operative consultation for laser eye surgery and involves establishing the largest size of your pupil in low light levels ensuring that when refractive eye surgery takes place the correct size of corneal area is treated.

This is measured digitally with an infared pupillometer. If the treatment area is smaller than the pupil, there is a higher chance that after laser eye surgery you will have problems with your night vision with complications such as glare and halos.

As a rough guide, note that for people aged 20-30 the average pupil size is approximately 7mm.Patients with pupils larger than 7mm are more likely to have night vision problems, as are patients with high prescriptions.

Highly accurate measurements of pupil size are therefore extremely important as part of the pre operative consultation in laser eye surgery.
