PRK Laser Eye Surgery

PRK or photo-refractive keratectomy.

This was the first vision correction procedure to use excimer lasers it is considered to be the original laser eye surgery

In this eye treatment, no corneal flap is cut, instead the outer layer of cells from the surface of the cornea are removed entirely (ablated) using an excimer laser, an epithelial scraper/spatula, and usually in conjunction with the application of an alcohol solution.

The patient sits with the eye open(treated with local anaesthetic drops) looking carefully at a fixed target and the laser zaps pulses of light to painlessly remove the corneal layers. It only takes matter of a minute or two to carry out the laser procedure during which it is very important that the patient keeps the eye very still.

For patients who are short sighted (myopic) the cornea is flattened and for those who are long sighted (hypeopic) it is steepened, with astigmatism there is an individual smoothing process to ensure best vision

(More about short sight , long sight and astigmatism here)

After the surgery the ophthalmologist places a soft (bandage ) contact lens over the eye, to help the outer corneal layer whih has been treated with the laser to grow back.

Some antibiotic eye drops are normally prescribed to use during this healing stage which normally takes 4-5 days.During this period, the patient may experience some pain and blurred vision. Also to speed up recovery it is recommended not to drive and to refrain from strenuous exercise at this time.

Once the first eye has recovered a second operation can then be performed on the other

Only a small number of Photo Refractive Keratotomy operations are performed compared to the other laser eye surgery techniques. This pocedure is mainly used for patients with relatively thin or flat corneas, and /or who have large pupils.

A full range of refractive errors can be corrected, including myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism.

After this type of surgery it normally takes a few months to fully recover and obtain the best vision
