Poor Night Vision
Poor night vision is a common condition particularly in elderly patients.
Regardless of how good your eye sight is during the day everyone will find it more difficult to see clearly when in the dark or under low lighting conditions. There are two main causes of poor vision at night, the most common of which is night myopia, in which a person who may see clearly during the day will find their distance vision more blurred at night. This occurs simply because of a uncorrected short sightedness and can easily be corrected by an updated spectacle/eye prescription. Another much much rarer but more serious condition is the eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is an inherited condition. With this disease there is a progressive degeneration in the retina, resulting in gradually deteriorating vision at night and loss of peripheral vision, unfortunately there is known cure at present. A complication of some laser eye surgery procedures can also result in night vision problems, such as glare, halos and blurred vision, due to incomplete correction or when the treated area does not take into account the increased pupil diameter in the dark and low light conditions.
