See without glasses or contact lenses with orthokeratology !

If you do not like the idea of surgery perhaps you can consider orthokeratology as an alternative to laser eye surgery ?

OrthoK uses special contact lenses to reshape the cornea, to reduce Myopic (short-sighted) and Astigmatic (rugby ball shape surface) errors of the eye. Contact lenses are worn nightly to mould the cornea into an ideal shape for clear vision and then removed in the morning giving perfect vision (for most of the day ) without the need for spectacles or contact lenses.

In many ways it is an ideal alternative to refractive surgery.

Not everyone is suitable for orthok,as it has a range of refractive error (eye prescription) that it works best with, usually in a range of between -3.00 and -7.00 dipoptres of myopia, with small amounts of astigmatism

An ideal candidate for orthoK is a teenager (who could not undergo laser eye surgey because of age and the fact that the eyes have not matured ) as not only does it eliminate the need for spectacles or contact lenses but research has shown that it can in some cases retard the progression of myopia.

The success rate is usually good however the results depend on the individual reponse to corneal moulding

The procedure basically involves a special fitting of rigid contact lense which mould the corneal shape of weeks and months to obtain satisfactory day time vision.Once stabilised a special set of maintenace lenses are fitted ,sometimes worn at 48 hr intervals to maintain the corneal shape for sharp vision

Orthok has many benefits not least in that surgery is not required ,although it does require a disciplined effort in attending appointments for fitting over a period of months, and it is necessary to continue wearing maintenance lenses nightly or bi-nightly to keep the vision clear for most of the day

OrthoK is slightly less expensive than laser eye surgery with no commonly reported side effects.

See a 'promotional' video below which outlines the procedure.
