A Macular Star
Macular star is a kind of star like structure that is formed when the various deposits of the different hard exudates material which primarily comprise lipids, fibre layers, etc. radiate in a star-like pattern around the macula region inside the eye.
This is generally found to be associated hypertensive retinopathy, neuroretinitis, etc. These can also be associated with optic neuropathy. Through several studies, it has been found that the those stars that were associated with optic neuropathy had the shortest duration of approximately five months while the longest duration when associated with the same condition was found to be eight months. It has also been found that in most of the cases these type of star like structures generally develop in relatively elderly population group and also in those individuals who had a prevalence of vascular disease. However, no sexual predominance has been found to be associated in case of occurrence of these star like structures. Studies have also been conducted in order to understand the effect of these exudates on the general visual functions of an individual and it has been found that no significant impact is there on the general visual functions because of the occurrence of the stars. At times, optic disk edema has also been found to be associated as a group of disorders along with a star of the macular region. It is then presented in the form of different clinical symptoms such as swelling of the optic disk, sudden vision loss, etc.
