Macular Pucker

Macular pucker can be described as a scar tissue that is developed on the macula of the eye and it is generally found to be located in the center of the light sensitive tissue of the eye which is called the retina of the eye.

The macula always provides sharp and central vision whereas often blurred and distorted central vision is seen to occur in case of this macular condition. There have been several other names that have been given to this structure that is, epiretinal membrane, preretinal membrane, cellophane maculopathy, retina wrinkle, surface wrinkling retinopathy, premacular fibrosis, and internal limiting membrane disease. This macular condition is also called epiretinal membrane, preretinal membrane, cellophane maculopathy, retina wrinkle, surface wrinkling retinopathy, premacular fibrosis, and internal limiting membrane disease. Most of the times, the prime cause of formation of this structure is vitreous detachment and it has been generally found to occur in those people who are above the age of 50 years. Thus, as an individual increases in his age, the risk of developing this scar tissue increases. There are some of the diseases and disorders that can also trigger the occurrence of this condition. These conditions include detached retina, inflammation of the eye, etc. The people who are suffering from diabetes also generally have an increased tendency of developing this scar tissue. Other reasons could be trauma due to an injury to the eye or due to surgery. This type of condition generally does not require any specific treatment.
