A lazy eye and how to correct it.

Types and cure of Lazy Eye

The clinical term is Amblyopia; this type of vision problem is very common in the under-40 age group and causes vision loss in many people. The amblyopia cannot be solved by corrective eye gear like contact lenses and glasses and it gradual gives rise to loss of depth perception and partial loss of vision. Amblyopia problem never affects both the eyes simultaneously; the brain for some unknown reason starts to ignore the images perceived by the amblyopic eye. This phenomenon leads to loss of vision in one of the eyes. Children are most commonly affected by this problem and it has been estimated that two to three percent of all children below six years are affected by some degree of lazy eye condition.

Causes:

Doctors say that anything that obstructs normal vision in children from birth till the age of six can cause this condition. Amblyopia can arise if the child has different vision correction prescriptions for each of the eyes. Strabismus or the constant turning of one eye is also one of the reasons for Amblyopia. Doctors suggest that the loss of vision takes place in the brain and not in the eyes, so the amblyopia is completely functional.

If one of the eyes gives a distorted vision, then the brain can suppress the functioning of that particular eye and no kind of corrective surgery can cure the problem once it is done. Suppression of the amblyopic eye is very common in patients suffering from this affliction.

Since the Amblyopia occurs in only one eye, so it goes unnoticed in most children until they reach a later age. Complete eye checks are very important in the early diagnosis. Examination with the cyclopelagic drops has given good results in children below six years of age.

Treatment

The treatment involves glasses and eye drops along with some vision therapy. Eye patching of the active eye is also a common treatment for, if the patient is below six years of age. Recent studies have shown that amblyopia can be successfully treated in hundred percent cases if the patient is diagnosed within the age of seven. After the age barrier of seven is crossed, vision therapy becomes a very important aspect of the entire treatment regime. The good news is that with the help of regular therapy and proper care amblyopia can be cured completely.
