Keratitis
Keratitis is a painful inflammation of the cornea(the clear window at the front of the eye)
There are several possible causes - bacterial or viral infection - fungal disease - trauma to front of eye The symptoms include a painful red eye.The blood vessels around the cornea are also inflammed and swollen and the patirnt will often find bright lights uncomfortable.
All cases of a painful red eye require further investigation by an ophthalmologist as a matter of urgency. Treatment depends on the causes, and involves medication to treat the source of the infection. These can be used both as eye drops and taken orally, depending on the severity of the condition. Early intervention can prevent any possible more serious and permanent eye damage which the condition may cause.
