Iritis

Iritis, by definition is an inflammation of the iris (colored part of the eye which surrounds the pupil).

Often it appears suddenly and has the following symptoms

- eye is red and inflammed

- pupil is constricted or distorted

- eye and often front of head around the eye is painfiul

- vision is blurred.

An inflammed iris is often associated with systemic diseases such as auto-immune disorders(arthritis, chrons disease etc) and also other infectious diseases .In many cases the true cause of an outbreak is never found.

Examination of the eye suffering with this condition will often exhibit light sensitivity, a mis-shapen small pupil and floaters in the front anterior compartment of the eye, just behind the cornea.Often one eye is affected and later both.

Any occurence of a red eye and especially in combination with pain in the ocular region needs further medical exmaination to rule out this and other more serious eye conditions.

Treatment requires topical steroid eye drops and anti inflammatory mediaction. Pain relief medication can also help with associated headaches and the use of sunglasses is also helpful to reduce light sensitivity.

Our own web editor Dominic has himself suffere with this problem and is happy to provide further information, you can contact him here
