Multifocal Implant Lens

The Multifocal Implant Lens and its uses.

This artificially implanted lens is now used as an option for patients who have had both crystalline lenses in their eyes removed due to bi lateral cataracts (clouding up of normal transparent lens inside the eye ) This procedure can greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses, for both distance and reading!

After 40, the ability to generate the extra focusing power needed to read up close diminishes, which results in a person needing reading glasses or bifocals (presbyopia) Most cataracts occur over the age of 60 yrs when a person often needs correction for distance and reading vision.

With a mutifocal lens implant the cloudy cataract lens in both eyes is replaced with a artificial replacement (refractive lensectomy). Previously this replacement lens could only correct distance vision with a need to still wear reading or even bifocals post surgery. The optimal result occur when a person has a near zero eye prescription preoperatively.

These modern implants produce two focal points, for distance vision and near/reading vision, like commonly worn bifocal glasses.

The benefit of using this implant is that each eye can see both distance and near objects clearly

Some patients who have refractive lensectomy using this form of implant, will require enhancement laser eye surgery to obtain the best vision.
