Eye twitching is an involuntary twitching eye muscle in the eyelid and is a very common condition.

It can be irritating but in most cases is completely harmless and has no other side effects.

Experiencing a twitching eye can not only be a bit worrying, but also potentially embarrassing.

This is something that millions of people around the globe need to contend with at some time in their life, but for others it becomes a more persistent problem.

There are a number of different reasons why this twitching could be occurring; in most instances it won’t be a sign that there is anything serious causing the symptom, but occasionally this may be the case.

What Causes Eyelid Twitching?

There are actually quite a number of different explanations as to what could be causing a twitching eye. In most instances it will be the bottom eyelid that is doing the twitching but it canbe the top lid also.

A lot of people will get the occasional eye twitch but it will never become serious enough for them to become worried about the condition – although they may feel a bit embarrassed about it.

Some people will experience this spasm in the eye lid for a day or two but it can last for a lot longer than this. Even if the spasm does last a long time it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something too serious causing the problem.

The underlying cause of a twitching eye is believed to be connected to the basal ganglion. This is a part of the brain that controls muscle movement; it is located in the frontal lobe.

There are many things that can trigger it but these eye spasms occur when there is a malfunction of the basal ganglion.

There are a number of different conditions that could be causing the basal ganglion to malfunction and we will examine these in detail here. Knowing the likely cause of eye twitching can be helpful because then we can work on a way of combating the problem.

Of course it is never advisable for people to try and diagnose and treat any condition, and medical advice will often be advised. Here are some of the possible conditions that arecausing eye twitching.

– The number one cause of eyelid twitching is stress; maybe this is because we are about to do something that is stressful or that we have been experience a lot of worry in our lives recently.

One common example of how stress can cause an eye twitch is whenthe best man has had to give a speech at a wedding; it is not uncommon for these people to experience an eye twitch while performing. Long term stress can lead to eye strain and other problems that can cause twitching.

– People who suffer from Tourette’s syndrome or some other neurological problems can often suffer from excessive eye twitching.

– Tiredness is another common cause of eye twitching; this may be because of the physical or mental factors associated with lack of sleep.

– If you are suffering from a twitching eye it could be a sign that you have certain nutritional deficiencies in your diet. There has been some researchthat suggests that it could be the lack of magnesium in the diet that is most likely to be the cause of this type of twitching. In general though the best advice is to make sure we are always getting a balanced diet.

– A twitching eye can be caused by certain allergies. In this instance it may not be the fact that the basal ganglion is malfunctioning but that histamine is being released in theeye – this always happens when we rub our itchy eyes.

– There is also evidence to suggest that excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeine may be a factor in causing eye twitching and we may want to review our intake of both of these. For difficulty reducing alcohol intake, many professional centers nationwide offer assistance.

– If we spend too much time staring at a computer screen then we can strain our eyes and this two can lead to these eye spasms. This is becoming a more common cause of the condition as more and more people spend hours glued to their computer screens.

– If you suffer from dry eyes then this irritation can also mean that you will begin to experience eye twitching.

As you can see there are many possible reasons as to why you might be experiencing this type of twitching and the problem is usually not that serious.

How to Deal With Eye Twitching

Even though a twitching eye is generally not a sign that there is something seriously wrong with us it is still something we will probably want to avoid. It can be a bit embarrassingwhen our eye lid starts to quiver like an out of control jelly and this may make us very selfconscious.

If we are already stressed because of a public appearance this twitching eye is likely to increase our discomfort even more. Of course the way we tackle to problem will very much depend on the cause but here are a few suggestions:

– Learn stress relieving techniques such as meditation and relaxation exercise. If we have a stressful event coming up then we can make use of these.

1. Make sure that our diet is balanced and not missing any important nutrients.

2. Reduce our consumption of caffeine and alcohol.

3. Make sure that we are getting enough sleep at night, and if we suffer from insomnia to seek medical advice.

4. If we suffer from dry eye then we should get this treated.

5. If we work on computers or spend a lot of time on them we should take regular breaks to avoid eye strain.
