How to Cure Eye Twitching

Eye twitching,or involuntary twitching of the muscle in the eyelid is a very common condition. It can be irritating but in most cases is completely harmless and has no other side effects.

Involuntary spasms of the eyelid muscle (known as blepaharospasm) cause the eyelid to twitch. These twitches can affect either one or both eyes, and can occur intermittingly over a period of hours or in some cases days or even weeks.

Eyelid twitches occur usually because an individual is suffering from fatigue and a shortage of sleep. In most cases these eyelid twitches will rectify themselves after a period of rest.

eye twitching A list of causes of eyelid twitching:

- tiredness

- stress

- prolonged near vision work (like on a computer screen)

If the twitches are abnormally persistant, affect other parts of the body, are combined with raised body temperature or are associated with pain it is very important to consult a physician or ophthalmologist for further investigation.

In extremely rare cases eyelid twitching can be associated with serious conditions affecting the nervous system such as Multiple Sclerosis, but remember this is extremely rare.

Treatment of eyelid twitching is not often required. Most of the time the twitching will disappear just as unnoticed as its arrival.

Recommended treatments involve

- Rest

- Sleep

- Reduction in Stress

- Decrease Caffeine and Alcohol consumption

- Soothing eye compresses.

For persistent cases of eyelid twitching eg: those which last for a period of months necessitate further medical investigation. An injection of Botox (by a medical practitioner) can usually eliminate the problem and prevent reoccurrence of persistant eyelid twitching.
