Laser Eye Surgery Suitability.
Laser eye surgery suitability for a person can only be obtained by an individual consultation at your local eye clinic however this is a general outline.
The main requirements are that a patient is 1.in good health 2. over 21 years of age 3. has a stable (unchanged for at least one year prior to potential surgery ) eye prescription The
eyesight prescription
must be within a recommended range.
For LASIK procedures this is commonly between –1.00 to –10.00 shortsightedness (myopia) or +1.00 to +5.00 (hyperopia) including astigmatism.
For patients with much higher prescriptions, visual errors can still be corrected by other techniques such as implanting a lens (IOL) into the eye, instead of using a laser.
Laser eye surgery is normally not recommended for very low levels of eyesight correction, i.e. -0.50 dioptre unless combined with astigmatism.
The following patient categories are not normally laser eye surgery candidates
Pregnant women & nursing mothers
People with a lazy eye/amblyopia
Blind/Partially Sighted patients.
Certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases (eg: rheumatoid arthritis), immunodeficiency states (eg. HIV) and diabetes as they may may prevent proper healing after a refractive procedure.
