How to prevent eye strain

People living in the modern world are no strangers to eye strain. Our daily lives require us to stare at the computer screen for long periods of time, we are also forced to drive on the roads and all this puts a lot of pressure on the eyes. When the eye muscles are over used for prolonged periods of time, lactic acid accumulates in the muscles and they are not able to function properly. People who are above forty and suffer from frequent symptoms of eye stress may require spectacles or some kind of vision correction to improve their plight. Eye strains cause headaches, blurriness of vision, loss of concentration, pain, tearing of eyes, etc.

Here are few ways to cure this problem:

• Most of the jobs these days require us to look at a monitor for long periods. You should decrease the glare of the screen and setup the screen on high contrast so that it does not put too much stress on the eye. If possible, try to get rid of the cathode ray tube monitor and instead buy a liquid Crystal Display one. There are special spectacles available for computer users that help reduce the strain on the eye.

• You should consider wearing sunglasses whenever you go outdoors during the daylight hours. The Ultra violet rays of the sun can make your eyes to lose their efficiency by a great degree. While shopping for sunglasses it is best to opt for the ones with polarized glasses as they help to keep the eyes stress free.

• Most often people forget to blink and this increase the strain on the eye. Whenever you blink the tear glands on the eye secrete a fluid that lubricates the eye and replenishes it with ions, so blink often.

• Whenever you feel that the eyes are getting strained, take a break and splash your eyes with clean water. This helps the eye to gain moisture and smoothes the surface. Splashing with water also removes debris that may have been deposited on the eye.

• Try not to watch the television in a completely dark room as this can cause a lot of strain on the eye, always keep a night lamp on so that the flicker of the screen does not cause you any trouble.

If you have prolonged problems with eye stress or indeed any vision then it would be a good idea to get your eye checked by an eye care professional.
