Episcleritis
Episcleritis may be defined as an inflammatory condition of the episclera of the eye. Eplisclera is the connective tissue which exists between the conjunctiva and sclera.
The eyes become extremely become red in this condition and therefore it may be sometimes diagnosed as conjunctivitis or pink eye. However, it may not be associated with discharge or tearing. It may also be at times closely associated with conditions such as arthritis, lupus and inflammatory bowel disease.
The condition is more commonly found in women than in men. It affects the people who are in their age group 30 to 40 years. Along with redness of the eyes, discomfort may also be associated with this condition. The process used to diagnose the condition is termed as slit lamp examination of the eye. The doctor often looks at symptoms such as discharge, pain, etc. while diagnosing this condition. The condition may not require any treatment. However, chilled artificial tears may be used to soothe the eyes and they are aimed at reducing the inflammation.
