Ectropion

Custom Search

Ectropion is an eye condition which is characterized by the presence of a sagging lower eyelid. Owing to this, the eye is normally left exposed and also dry.

Lack of tone of the delicate muscles which play the role of holding the eye lid taut to the eye is the prime reason for this condition. The clinical symptom that is commonly seen with this condition is tearing in the eye. However, tearing itself further aggravates this condition and repeated wiping of the tears leads to eye lid sagging further.

This condition has been most commonly seen in elderly who are aged above 60 years. The most common signs and symptoms associated with this condition are irritation in the eyes, burning sensation, excessive tearing in the eyes, redness and irritated eyelids.

A routine eye examination may be sufficient to diagnose the condition. Use of artificial tears can help in taking care of the irritation. Ointments can be used to lubricate the eyes. However, surgery is often necessary to correct the sagging of the eyelids.
