Dry eye syndrome.
Dry eye syndrome,(medical name keratoconjunctivitis sicca), is an eye condition where not enough tears are made , or when the tears produced by the eyes evaporate too rapidly.
This causes drying out of the eye leading to redness, inflammation and irritation. The syndrome is a very common eye condition affecting up to 20% of the adult population at any one time. It occurs more frequently in females compared to males and also the incidences of occurrence increase with age, being particularly common in those aged 65 years and over. There is also a higher occurrence of the condition in those who have undergone laser eye surgery. The principal symptoms are burning itchy eyes, sometimes causing blurriness of the vision. Treatment is principally with eye drops or gel to replace the lost moisture provided to the eye by the tear fluid. A regular eye examination can help diagnose the disease
