Drusen

Drusen may be defined as an eye condition which is characterized by the presence of the tiny yellow or white accumulations of extracellular material on the Bruch’s membrane of the retina (light sensitive tissue at back of the eye).

However, with advancing age, the condition is generally commonly seen to occur. However, in the people who are aged above the age of 40 years have the presence of hard material. Large and more numerous symptoms may be seen in the macula and this is an early sign in the condition of age related macular degeneration (AMD).

The diagnosis of the condition is possible with the help of ophthalmoscopy. The condition is an increased risk for the complication of AMD. These yellow or white accumulations which are characteristic of this condition also contain proteins and lipids. However, the source of proteins and lipids is not known in them.

These accumulations also comprise trace elements. The most concentrated trace element that is found is zinc. Investigators have concluded that the various deposits that result in this condition are actually a product of the immune system.
