Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the principal eye condition associated with diabetes. Left untreated it can result in blindness.
The two main features of the disease are 1. leakage from blood vessels (haemorrhages) in the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina) causing damage to vision. 2. growth of new blood vessels (neo-vascularization) in the retina. These tend to be fragile and easily break potentially causing more blood leakage and visual damage. If a person is diabetic or there is diabetes in the family it is important to have regular eye examinations so any changes can be detected early. Specialist laser eye treatment of the retina can be used to seal off any leaking or new blood vessels. Close attention to the treatment of the general diabetic condition should also be applied
