Diabetic Macular Edema

Diabetic Macular Edema is a condition that is generally seen to occur with the inflammation of the retina of the eye associated with the diabetes mellitus condition.

This inflammation can occur due to the leaking of the fluids from the blood vessels within the macula of the eye. The development of the condition can result into blurring of the vision in the central vision field. There is also a progression of the visual loss over a period of time and thus it makes it extremely difficult to focus properly. There are approximately 10 per cent of the chances that the diabetics will develop this condition. The condition has been found to be closely associated with diabetic retinopathy. There are other reasons also that can aggravate this condition such as hypertension, and fluid retention associated with hypertension, etc. There are different types of edema that is, focal and diffuse types. There is a different type of treatment that needs to be adopted in order to treat these two different types. The foci of vascular abnormalities are primarily responsible for causing the focal macular edema while dilated retinal capillaries of the retina are primarily responsible for causing the diffuse type of edema. There are different types of laser treatments that can be resorted to in order to treat the two different types of edema.
