Corneal Transplant Surgery
Corneal transplant surgery (keratoplasty), is surgery used to replace the cornea, the clear tissue at the front of the eye.
It is recommended for patients with keratoconus who have not had success with other forms of treatment, or in cases where the cornea has been scarred or injured. The replacement clear corneal tissue is taken from a recently deceased person. The operation involves removing a central piece of cornea, and suturing it in into the receipient eye. After the procedure, an eye patch is worn and antibiotic/steroidal medication prescribed.Full recovery normally takes around 8-10 months. If necessary spectacles or contact lenses can be subsequently worn for vision correction. Rare complications sometimes occur due to tissue rejection.
