Corneal Scarring

Corneal scarring is the condition of the cornea that may result primarily because of the injury that may be caused to the cornea of the eye. The reasons for this injury could be abrasion, laceration, burns or disease.

The vision may be impacted depending on the extent to which the scarring takes place. Some of the deeper abrasions and ulcerations can at times be responsible for causing the complete loss of the corneal tissue and it is actually replaced by the scar tissue. There are different diseases that could be responsible in causing these scarry situations. These are diseases such as vascularization, herpes simplex, syphilis and keratitis, etc. When the corneal tissue scarring is dense in nature, it can actually go to impact the vision in a person and in such a scenario; a corneal transplant is also indicated at times. Most of the times, the success is achieved with corneal transplantation. This is because the rejection rate is generally minimal. However, still the best recommended treatment is generally prevention of the disease or prevention of the injury to the eye. Though minor injuries are generally coped up well by cornea but in case when highly sensitive cornea is scratched, in those cases, a possibility occurs that healthy cells may slide over quickly and they can also patch the injury before the infection actually occurs.
