Corneal Abrasion

A Corneal Abrasion can be described as a painful scratch or scrape of the surface of the cornea or the clear part of the eye. There are different causes that may be associated with the corneal abrasion. It can be caused when someone hits the eye and any injury can cause abrasion to the cornea of the eye.



A corneal injury may result when someone goes into the eye. It can be possible when the wind is blowing and a dried leaf particle may go into the eye and then this material may scratch the eye. Another possibility of an abrasion getting caused is by the entry of a foreign body such as sand or wood. This can also cause corneal scratches on the corneal surface of the eye.The other reasons could be hot cigarette flash that may enter into the eye. This can also cause serious damage to the eye in addition to causing abrasion of the corneal surface. It may also be caused when you are continuously rubbing your eyes and irritation may be caused. This is also possible that when the contact lenses are worn longer than as recommended, and then also the surface of the cornea may be abraded. Some other reasons may be arising because of the infections in the eye. An unprotected exposure of the eyes to the ultra-violet rays can also be one of the biggest reasons. There are different symptoms that characterize this condition such as blurred vision, eye pain, spasm, tearing in the eyes. Medical treatment of the abrasion can be achieved through use of antibiotics, medicated eye drops or ointments. Some of the ophthalmologists may also make use of the steroids in order to reduce the inflammation that may be caused by abrasion.
