Bloodshot Eyes

Suffering with Bloodshot eyes? Find out the most common causes.

Bloodshot or red eyes occur when the fine blood vessels on the front of your eye become engorged and irritated.

It is very important if you have a red eye to consult a medical practitioner for further advice.

Often a bloodshot or red eye is nothing to worry about, but in some cases the causes can be more serious and require medical intervention.

Some of the most common causes are

Conjunctivitis/Pink eye, infection and inflammation of the conjunctiva(clear skin on inner eyelid and whites of the eye)

Blepharitis, an infection of the eyelid margins.

Dry Eyes, through reduced tear lubrication.

Corneal Ulceration, when an ulcer occurs on the cornea (the transparent tissue at the front of the eye)

Subconjunctival Haemorrhage, which can occur through rupture of the very fine blood vessels at the front of the eye.

Other possible and more serious causes of red eye include Glaucoma (increased eye fluid pressure), Trauma and Iritis (inflammation of Iris).

Remember for all cases of redness of the eye, it is recommended that you consult your eye care practitioner as soon as possible for full investigation
