Adies Tonic Pupil.

Adies Tonic Pupil is also known as Holes-Adie’s Syndrome or Adie Syndrome. It is described as a neurological disorder and affects the pupil of the eye and the autonomic nervous system.

The prime cause behind the condition is the damage to postganglionic fibers of the parasympathetic innervation of the eye. It generally happens because of viral or bacterial infection which can then result in inflammation and the condition manifests as a tonically dilated pupil.

The symptoms associated with the condition are abnormal pupil size, loss of deep tendon reflexes, etc. Difficulty in reading may also be associated with this condition.

The treatment for the condition comprises using reading glasses for correction of the impairment of the eye. Additionally, pilocarpine drops may also be administered both as as a treatment as well as for the diagnosis of the condition. These drops should be administered three times a day. If the disease is not treated by medicated eye drops then the condition may be treated with Thoracic sympathectomy which is a definitive treatment for this condition.
